The plan should create or retain 6,900 jobs in New York State, including 450 projected jobs at the SUNY IT Campus in Marcy. This is in addition to the 400 jobs due to be created when the new offices and "clean room" are completed in 2012. Earlier this year on this blog site I highlighted a tour of SemaTech at Albany State College which showcased much of this new wafer chip technology, and SUNY's plan to be at the forefront of this newest chip manufacturing technology. It is one of the few glimmers of opportunity this area has had in a long time, for a credible new industry that offers the potential and possibilities the nanotechology industry does. This will also benefit the MV Edge in it's effort to market the site in Marcy which sits adjacent to the SUNY IT Campus. EDGE has attempted to market the site for over 10 years to any company that might produce computer chips there.

Tough Times in New Hartford...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 209px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DH8XY1zLleM/TmEVhJWS3vI/AAAAAAAACvM/XYhNAMoo7Ng/s400/hanna%2Bmailer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647819066888609522" />
I think we all would agree that things are pretty tough economically not only here but in the whole country. So, I called Congressman Hanna's office to voice my displeasure about the use of taxpayer monies to pay for a beautiful glossy brochure promising all of the great things he is doing and will do for us as our congressman. My point is not directed as a political one, just a common sense one that says that in a lean economy tens of thousands of taxpayers dollars not be used to promote a political agenda. These thousands should have been used to bring in jobs or for simple things like road repair. Congressman, and any other politicians; please be considerate and please refrain from sending out these expensive glossies at our expense or put thousands and thousands of dollars of signage to get elected, when a simple handshake would work better.

A Unique and Artsy Garden Perspective Here in NH!

VIDEO: Artistic New Hartford yard piques attention of neighbors - Utica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch,
www.uticaod.com

New Hartford Supervisor and Board OK Use Of Eminent Domain to Secure Clinton St Extension Rights

<img style="display:block; After more than eight years of discussions, the New Hartford Town Board voted to use eminent domain to take an area of land from the owners of Twin Orchards for the Clinton Street extension project. The road which would run adjacent to Lowes and Hartford Insurance and then connect Clinton Street-Middle Settlement to Lower Woods Road, has created much concern because of the increased traffic this will bring in this corridor, as well as the use of tax payer monies to fund a private park. Work has yet to begin on the proposed 840 on-off ramp, which was the source of another heated battle over the use of tax payer monies to fund a much more expensive intersection, stop-light, and crossing, which was voted down and a scaled down proposal was then accepted.

The board voted in favor of taking the land by a 3-2 vote: Town Supervisor Patrick Tyksinski, Second Ward Councilwoman Christine Krupa and Third Ward Councilman David Reynolds voted for it. First Ward Councilman Donald Backman and Fourth Ward Councilman Rich Woodland voted against it.

Former Town Supervisor and Mayor of Village dies

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of William Keiser, who passed away after a lengthy illness.

William served as a Trustee for the Village of New Hartford from 1980 to 1984. Most of us here I'm sure are looking towards spring-time by now. The geese are returning, the first flowers are trying to push their way up, and the skies seem to not be as ominous and threatning with the snow clouds that we've gotten used to seeing much of this winter. We'll all cross our fingers and "think spring" and hope for a beautiful next 3 seasons in the Mohawk Valley! Enjoy these photos I took of New Hartford today.

<img style="display:block; As things have gotten tougher here in the Mohawk Valley, the developments at the SUNYIT Campus is one of the glimmers and bright spots now, and for the future. Especially, as an opportunity for our talented young graduates employment prospects and the opportunity to stay here in the Mohawk Valley! Groundbreaking is expected on the new "Clean-room" and office space to be occupied and utilized by high technology companies. The facilities and the availability of a young, highly trained work force, has become a selling point, and is something of great interest to high technology chip fab companies. Many of which are looking at the possibility of building an adjacent plant at the site next door, to build new state of the art chip fab plants. We applaud and wish SUNYIT well in their efforts. No matter when, or how many times I venture up, the view always takes my breath away.

Tyksinski Appoints New Finance Director

Town Supervisor Patrick Tyksinski on Wednesday night appointed New Hartford resident Dan Dreimiller as the town’s part-time director of finance.

The director of finance position will pay $10,400 annually and will require five to 10 hours of work per week.

Dreimiller is a certified public accountant who runs an accounting firm in Utica and has experience with municipal accounting.

the Future of the Mohawk Valley?

<img style="display:block; The Genesis sponsored trip last week to SUNY/Albany with over a 100 (2-busloads) of MV citizens who got a first-hand look at the exciting work being done by SUNY, SemaTech, IBM, AMD and other companies looking to avail themselves of the latest nano technology. The 300mm chip represents what has been deemed the next "Industrial Revolution" because it introduces a new era in nanotechnology, highlighted by the introduction of the smartphone (Apple i-phone) in 1997. The project at SUNY/IT Utica-Rome, will be a collaboration with this group, and will feature "clean-room" facilities and office space for technology companies. All in the hopes that "clustering" next to the SUNY/Albany-Utica IT initiative along with the Luther forest (AMD Chip fab) as well as IBM chip fab, will spur development at the Marcy chip fab site. Timing and placement of a chip fab at Marcy seems to be opportune now and hopefully this will be the beginning of a new positive era in the Mohawk Valley. They have already leased space to the first tenant at SUNY/IT and have developed the first "Nano-Technology" degree in the U.S., in anticipation of being able to supply the workforce (especially here in the Mohawk Valley)for this rapidly growing and expanding industry. Kudos to Genesis and especially to Ray Durso for sharing with us this exciting opportunity!

Photos of SUNY/Albany SemaTech Facility

<img style="display:block; At least that's what a number of state taxpayers who filed a lawsuit against the state think - as they try to stop New York from giving all that taxpayer money to corporations. Our Steve Ference reports on the latest revelations about how much money businesses get as the case moves forward.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- "We're trying to make it illegal for the state or any state agency to give taxpayer cash to corporations," said attorney James Ostrowski.

The group of state taxpayers he represents, who filed a lawsuit to stop their tax money from being funneled to businesses, saw their case get a second chance when the appellate court recently agreed with them. Now, the state's fighting back. In doing so, they're revealing how much of your money is given to corporations.

Ostrowski said, "They're alleging as much as $4.8 billion is involved. That doesn't include subsidies by local governments which we're intending to challenge if we win this case."

The documents point out significant state projects, like $1.37 billion in grants to GlobalFoundries to create 1,400 new jobs, $4 million to CVS to create 600 new jobs, and $1.3 million grant to First Niagara Financial Group to create 200 new jobs.
http://utica-mohawkvalley.ynn.com/content/top_stories/512468/court-documents--new-york-taxpayers-give--4-8-billion-to-businesses/

Saranac - Matt Brewing Company - Time flies..when you're enjoying your favorite beer!

after running my 25th Boilermaker, I have to admit this is one of my favorite parts!
even at 9:30am!!!
click below....

Saranac - Matt Brewing Company - Time flies..when you're enjoying your favorite beer!

Is Rt 840 Destroying A Sensitive Wildlife Area?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 110px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h69T5UBiVs0/TBZ0SQ1NNoI/AAAAAAAABjs/N0e6IKC-kyg/s200/heron+low+res.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5482697453474756226" />
The heavy usage by hundreds of residents daily, is a testament to the success of the DOT's Rt 840's recreational trail system. It affords the opportunity for many who normally would not have the opportunity, to get close to nature and all if affords.

It is not unusual to have families of geese or ducks resting in the grass with joggers or walkers passing closely by. The 840 roadway was built right next to a section of treeless and exposed trails, and is only a 100 feet or so, from the edges of the marshes where you can often see ducks and geese swimming or resting in the grassy areas next to the road. These same animals find that the tranquility and peace they seek in this formerly secluded marsh, are threatened in much the same way the animals that once occupied the marshes between Sangertown and Commercial Drive were. Although the DEC tried to maintain duck nesting sites and to encourage certain species of wildlife at Sangertown, most have moved on or were hit by cars, as they tried to fly in to the marsh areas. And the same thing happens every week along 840. Next to the marsh area, hundreds of small birds, ducks, geese, turtles, fox, woodchucks and occassionally deer are run over as they attempt to cross or fly over to enter or leave the marsh area.

It leaves many to wonder why the DEC and it's planners would open up and expose a wildlife area like this, and put thousands of animals at risk without making some provision for this. Perhaps the best solution now might be to build a wall like the one that they put up in NY Mills to help discourage the wildlife from entering or leaving from the roadway area of Rt 840. Also, an added benefit would be that it would help buffer recreational users of the trail from annoying road noise and distraction.

This is especially important with new construction (New Hartford school bus depot, hotel, office bldgs) being proposed on both sides of 840. Wildlife should not be "squeezed" into ever narrowing areas of green areas set aside for them. Especially in a period when the area is not growing, but is diminishing in size. And we certainly cannot afford to subsidize careless and poorly planned suburban sprawl that is destroying not only pristine wildlife areas, but the character of the community. Just like at Sangertown Square, we will soon see fewer and fewer creatures along the 840 corridor, only more cars, paved lots, and resultant noise and pollution. Things which will only diminish the quality of life that we love here in the Mohawk Valley.

Movie Screening

PRISON TOWN, U.S.A. free film screening & discussion
Date: Thursday, February 25, 2010
Time: 6pm Location: KUNSELA AUDITORIUM, SUNYIT

What is it like to live in a community where prisons are the largest employer? As the new Town Supervisor, Tyksinski will have to deal with a possible 54% property tax increase in 2010, and finances will be very tight because the town’s main rainy day fund has been depleted in the last few years. Tyksinski will need to address and serve a population base in New Hartford that continues to decrease because of heavy tax burdens and costs of living, along with a sluggish local economy. Also of concern is that the remaining residents median age continues to increase, putting a greater strain on town and county resources.
Opportunity for future growth in New Hartford lies with the development of the new business park. The possibilities to develop high tech sites as originally proposed, in conjuction with the new SUNY NanoTech Center and the Marcy Chip Fab proposed site, are opportunities that offer hope to a community that is too tied into lower paying retail-service sector based businesses.

M&T Bank Donates Painting to New Hartford Library

If you enjoy local historical artwork you might enjoy checking out this charming painting of the Village of New Hartford from 1791-1984. It was commissioned by Savings Bank of Utica and hung for many years in the lobby of SBU and it's subsequent buyers including M&T Bank who donated the painting to the New Hartford Library. The painting done by Clinton, NY native Alba Scott in 1984, includes several well-known landmarks such as the Presbyterian Church, Sherrill Brook Bandstand, Butler Hall and the Point School. If you have time, get a window seat and a coffee at Casab's and watch as the world goes by. Then start your walk around the village by crossing Genesee Street and make your way up Oxford Road past the high school, and then enjoy a walk though the shady tree neighborhoods, and enjoy the many beautiful gardens, historic homes and churches along the way. If you're a real glutton for punishment, push your way up Paris Road to enjoy the lovely old homes and gardens. Save a few minutes and stop by to see and to pay tribute to New Hartford Veterans, at the Veteran's Park and the new reflecting pond across from Utica National. The village walk seems to be like stepping back in time, and the Veterans Memorial helps us to reflect on those who helped to make our way of life possible. Enjoy.

NH Business Park Meeting, Be there...or be quiet. The vote centers around a $2.9 million bond anticipation note approved by the NH Town Board in April 2008. The money is funding the reconstruction of the intersection at Seneca Turnpike and Woods Highway and improvements within the business park.
Special election on bond issue When: Noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 Where: All town polling places will be open. For absentee ballots, contact Gail at 733-7500 if you need one.
The bond will be transferred to a long-term serial bond that matches up with a 15-year payment-in-lieu of taxes agreement the town, school district and county have with the Hartford Insurance. A rejection of the bond will leave town residents with a large tax increase in five years when the town has to pay the balance of the bond note.

Seneca Turnpike Slowly Growing Outward

Development has slowly began to push up into the upper Seneca Turnpike commercial corridor in recent years. And although the former Pharmhouse Plaza has remained mostly vacant for many years, with Morehouse Appliances moving in that could all be changing soon. Plaza tenants currently include Cartridge World and Charlie’s Pizza. Morehouse Appliances has moved from the New Hartford Shopping Center to the plaza. Nichols Discount department store was originally there for many years followed by the Pharmhouse.

Across the road Danielle's completed extensive rennovations to the former Alfredo's Ristorante a few years ago as well as a new building that was erected by Pizza Hut.

This area is prime development area because of the construction of the New Hartford Business Park and it's main entrance about a half mile up the road on Lower Woods road. In the interest of fairness, municipalities need to work together to study a proposed intersection and traffic light on Route 840 and its impact on the community of Whitestown and New Hartford. Also, residents who use the road should be allowed a forum to voice their approval or disapproval. At issue: Is the town of New Hartford's and the developers insistence on bringing an intersection to Route 840 and a Woods Highway extension conflicting with the concerns of neighboring communities such as Whitestown and the thousands of users of the highway who would have to deal with another stoplight and the merging of hundreds of cars leaving-entering the business park and likewise as school buses from the new bus garage exit and enter onto 840. New Hartford officials and developers have insisted the traffic light is key to the success of the New Hartford Business Park while Whitestown officials argue that the intersection would be a hinderence to travelers on rt 840, and go against the use of rt840 as a high speed corridor though this area.

Picture from the back of Lowe's -distance of a 100 yards

St Elizabeth's Makes Offer For Former Hartford Building

St Elizabeth Hospital Group has an offer on the table to buy the former Hartford building on Middle Settlement Rd. The Town Board heard a request Wednesday to change the zoning at the site so that St. Elizabeth could buy the building. Robert Scholefield, vice president of the St. Elizabeth Medical Group said if the zoning is changed and the purchase offer becomes final, he is “fairly certain” the owners will accept the offer of $4 million. St. Elizabeth plans to move hospital-sponsored physician offices and business offices into about 60,000-square-feet of the building and lease the rest to private physicians. St. Elizabeth is tax-exempt, but the private physicians would pay taxes.

Marching Spartans Win Big!!!

Congratulations to the spectacular New Hartford Marching Spartans who finished their competition season undefeated, marking the second time since 2003 that the group won every show it entered plus the state championship.
